What is the best way (either website or software) for my Mom to type up and share her recipes with others?

Keep in mind she is a beginner computer user. She could use specialty recipe databases, but then anyone she shares the recipes with would need that same software or a reader of some kind.

If she uses an online system, she would want to be able to export it locally to have her own copies.

And she wants to be able to scan in some handwritten recipes if possible.

I know, this is asking a lot, but I have this great opportunity to get her to document her great recipes- and learn a lot about computers in the process! What is the best way (either website or software) for my Mom to type up and share her recipes with others?
www.freewebs.com

its got several diffent layouts for stuff...i use one to share stuff...and its FREE

if she scans recipes and they come out clear enough she can even upload the images. What is the best way (either website or software) for my Mom to type up and share her recipes with others?
Cooks.com is good, not sure if she can set up her own page or not but that's were I go to get most of mine when I'm looking for something special. I also think kraft, pillsbury, the food network, or maybe even betty crocker have websites you can submit to.
allrecipes.com, *no www*, it is awesome, I use it on a daily basis.
Allrecipes.com is a great website to find and share recipes. I go to it almost everyday, just to browse at what's new. All of the recipes are ones that people have uploaded and posted themselves. You can type in the searchbox what you're looking for and find hundreds of recipes! The thing I like about it is that at the bottom of every recipe there are comments from people about that recipe (how it turned out, suggestions, etc.) If you are a member you can upload recipes and leave comments. Another thing that is nice is you can upload pictures of your recipes and you can even upload pictures of a recipe that isn't ';yours';, but one that you have tried that's on the website. This gives people many pictures to look at to see what the results typlically look like. I personally love the website becuase it is real people posting, trying, commenting, and voting about the recipes. (You don't have to be a member to browse the recipes and look at comments and pictures, but you do have to be a member to post a recipe, post pictures of a recipe- whether it's of your recipe or someone else's-, and to post comments.) I hope this helps! Have fun!

There are any number of programs that will do what you want, and one that I know about that is specifically for recipes. Go to www.pcworld.com and click on ';downloads.'; Here you'll find many freeware, shareware or pay programs under the classification of ';organization,'; I believe. (The site has been recently revamped, so I'm not entirely sure about the new setup, but you won't have much trouble finding it. Also, PC Magazine's website, www.pcmag.com, has a service whereby you can download as many utilities as you want for an annual subscription fee of about $19.95. The offerings here are not as extensive as PC World, but there are some good ones.

As to a specific program for recipes I can only suggest that you go to www.tasteofhome.com. I think you might find what you're looking for there. It's a site for recipes from readers and is companion to Taste of Home magazine to which my wife is a subscriber. Hope you find what you're looking for.
I found a great program called Jarte that's perfect for organizing anything requiring text. It a terrific organizer and very simple to use and understand.

I found it at a freeware site, don't remember which, but it's easy enough to just type ';Jarte'; in Google or other search engine. It's freeware.

Can anyone recommend software or website where you can enter your own recipes and create your own cookbook?

I am looking to take my mom's cookbook (now being held together with duct tape) and enter the recipes into a software or onto a website where I can get copies made for gifts for my siblings. Can anyone recommend software or website where you can enter your own recipes and create your own cookbook?
I bought MasterCook software for that job. I like it because it also lists the nutrition values of the recipes I put in the book. You can cut a recipe in half or double it as well. And, if anyone is on a special diet, you can substitute things in the recipe and it will show you how that changed how much fat, carbs or whatever that recipe now has. And, one thing I especially like about it - you can add something special you use that isn't normally listed in the nutrition information of any other software. You would just type in the information off the box/bag/carton/whatever of the product you are using and it will be in there for any other recipes you create using that item. Can anyone recommend software or website where you can enter your own recipes and create your own cookbook?

  • Looking for recipe/meal/grocery planning software?

Hello. I need help in the kitchen. I don't mind cooking, but I hate grocery shopping and it seems like any time I want to cook I have to go to the grocery store for the ingredients. I hate that!

Anyway, I'm looking for some software I can use that has recipes already in it, lets me put in my own recipes, and puts the ingredients for the recipes into a shopping list that can be edited in case I already have some of the ingredients on hand. However, here is the big kicker - the software must allow me to adjust the recipes so they yield 2 servings.

I have tried Shoppingmate and I hate it. It makes no sense.

I have tried Snowbride and it doesn't allow changes to serving size except by changing the amount of each ingredient individually. That's too much work.

I have also tried BigOven and I like it, but when I scaled down the recipes to make 2 servings instead of 4, the measurements in the recipes stayed the same, so I think that is broken.

I have not yet tried Living Cookbook, but I will try it later tonight.

Any suggestions and testimonies will be appreciated and considered. Thanks!Looking for recipe/meal/grocery planning software?
I heard of a software in development that makes a grocery list based on each item you use - you run the item under the barcode reader and it's added to the list, but I don't think it's available to us yet. I've tried the serving %26amp; scaling tool on http://allrecipes.com/ but it comes up with odd measurements like 7/8 of a can, so I just cook for 4 people even though there's just 2 of us. It takes as much energy to cook for 2 as it does to cook for 4 or 6 people and there's enough left over to use as hubby's lunch or I freeze it for later. Home-made tv dinners are handy for those days when you just can't face cooking.

Before I start cooking, I get all the ingredients out so that there aren't any unpleasant surprises midway through the food prep. That's called mise en place, or ';everything in place.'; Every time I use something up, it gets added to the grocery list and I buy it whether I'll be using it soon or not. Until the day when I can scan my food inventory, this is the system I'll use.

I would recommend MIcrosoft Excel, the spreadsheet software for recipes, it is easier to type and see the info, you can store them and if you ever want to expand them yiu can do a equation to make a recipe for 4 into 100.

Look into Microsoft Works for Vista, it has a version of Excel and Word which can help you when you want to print them off.

How can I calculate the nutritional information in a recipe? Is there software I can use?

I have been carefully monitoring my calorie/fat intake and I am really struggling with how to calculate the nutritional information for recipes I make at home. For example, I'm making a pan of roasted veggies tonight. A sweet potato, a zucchini, half a butternut squash, and some other veggies. I can add all of these veggies up together but is the only way for me to figure out the calories/fat to weigh each ingredient individually, then figure out the total weight of the recipe, and then figure out the calorie count in a cup, half a cup, etc.?

I know there are lots of online tools (I use the one at Sparkpeople all the time) but they usually go by ';servings';. I type in the ingredients and tell it how many servings it makes. Trouble is, when I make a big pan or pot of something, I don't really know how many servings it makes. I am looking for something that will say, ok, one sweet potato, one zucchini, one onion, half a butterut squash, and a tablespoon of olive oil.....one cup of this mixture is X calories.

Is my only option to measure out how many ';servings'; there are immediately after making the dish? This seems like so much work.

Any ideas? Surely there has to be a program or software out there? How can I calculate the nutritional information in a recipe? Is there software I can use?

Macronutrients have been rounded in order to make the calculations easier to understand. Students will find that most nutrition books and calorie-counting guides follow the same procedure. You should note that the caloric values of the foods represented do not match the macronutrient profiles accurately, but serve as an approximation to their value.

Is there a good software for categorizing recipes?

I collect recipes from friends, family, Internet and magazines. I would like to enter these into some type of EASY to use software on my computer so I can print, scale up or down and put them into categories I can use. Otherwise, my recipes are in a drawer someplace with no way of finding the one I want.Is there a good software for categorizing recipes?
I second the recommendation for MasterCook. It does everything you listed as wanting it to do.

Print - provides several different formats

    Scaling - up and down

Categorize - Comes with a whole list of categories but it is really easy to add your own too. Each recipe can be put in as many categories as you want.

Plus it has a fabulous shopping list feature (love it when preparing for Christmas cookie baking as it creates running totals of ingredients needed.)

Menu planning feature is neat as well if you are planning for a family.

Nutritional information - does nutritional calculations and shows you which ingredients it couldn't calculate.

Easy to use import tool makes getting recipes into the software a snap.Is there a good software for categorizing recipes?
I just save my recipes on my favorites. I created a folder for each category inside a Recipe folder. Other thing you could do is to use the files, which is better for you. Go to my documents, create a folder for RECIPES and create folders inside for the categories. The good thing about this one is that you can cut and paste recipes to WORD and then save it in this folder. Easy and you don't need to spend money with soft wear.
I've used MasterCook/Cooking Light for years. You can get the software on ebay.

Use blog software. Wordpress would be great for this. She can post a daily recipe, categorize them in whatever fashion she likes, and people can click links to search or see specific categories. She has the option of allowing readers to leave comments to share tips on making recipes better, etc.

Wordpress is free, there are tons of free themes available so you can style it the way she wants (I'm sure there are food-related styles available), and the interface is easy enough for her to manage everything herself. All you need is someplace to host it. You'll need a hosting site with MySQL available, and there are tons of hosting companies that can accommodate you.
best ready made script I can recommend is WordPress software...

If you need help installing it and getting awesome wordpress theme that is content management ready - I can help you with this...

    What's a Good Recipe/Meal Planner/Shopping Software?

Hello, I've been looking for the best software to use for my family's needs. I've been using AllRecipes.com and like it, but worry one day that it will close and all my recipes will be gone. It's also a little limited.

I love to be organized. I think it makes everyday life much easier. I'm also kind of a techno geek. So the fact that so far I've not come up with a good solution on the computer for my recipes, menu planning %26amp; shopping is out of character for me and I'm ready to change this. I don't want to put a lot of time into a software to find that there's a better one for our needs.

Here's what I'm looking for. I would love to be able to ....

    - enter all my recipes

    - upload pictures for each

    - change the serving sizes and it automatically fix the ingredients

    - create a menu for the week/month

    - automatically create a shopping list from my menu

    - maybe have a list of what I already have on hand

Does anyone know of good software for me?

    Thanks, Jody :o)What's a Good Recipe/Meal Planner/Shopping Software?
Here's a great sight it has all the features you want. You can up-grade if you like. I've been cooking for 40 years and I like this. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom to see all the features. Bonus, nutritional value analysis. What's a Good Recipe/Meal Planner/Shopping Software?
I highly recommend MasterCook. I have been using it for over 10 years (started with version 3 or 4) and have upgraded periodically. It does everything you want it to do except maybe keep track of what you have on hand (though I do think you can search by ingredient). It also has a bang up nutritional calculator. The import tool is pretty slick too so getting recipes into the software is fairly painless.

Google ';cookbook recipe software';. There are lots of them. There are some forums where people review discuss them. If you are just looking for a way to save recipes 'Microsoft Word' seems to be popular. Or if you want super free you could use any word processor like notepad or openoffice.org.

Is there nutritional or recipe software that also figures out number of servings in the recipe(s)?

I want to alter favorite recipes by substituting ingredients to make them healthier i.e lower in fat, salt. etc...Many of them do not tell ';serving sizes';. My goal after altering the recipes is to know: 1 What a serving size is for the recipe 2 How many it serves and 3 The nutritional analysis of each serving. The software I have researched seems to create a recipe with nutritional analysis. But, has nothing on how to figure servings sizes. Is there nutritional or recipe software that also figures out number of servings in the recipe(s)?
I use Mastercook/cooking light. It will give you nutritional analysis, %26amp; you can sub any ingredients of choice. You can decide how many servings you want, %26amp; it will recalculate. I also go to cooking light's website. Their recipes tell you how many cups etc per serving.

Good old ';Microsoft Word'; would be my answer.

Living Cookbook (or Diet Pro... all of Living Cookbook plus diet tracking software)

I used to use MasterCook (but the began to be disappointed in the newer versions) and tried Cook'n, Recipe Center aand Big Oven. I finally settled on Living Cookbook and have been extremely happy. It does everything I want and more. When I thought it wouldn't do something I went on to the website bulliten board and asked questions, within hours the programmer/creater wrote me back with all the info I need. No one else will give you that kind of support.

I especially love the capture feature to copy and paste into Living Cookbook. Also you can download from EveryLastRecipe.com directly into Living Cookbook/Diet Pro

I find it very easy to add photos of my recipes (a feature I really like). And very easy to share recipes via email, print, printed collection, or by USB key.

I use the recipe websites all the time. But I collect recipes I love into my Living Cookbook. I don't want to log on one day to a website and be able to find that recipe I love. If it is in Living Cookbook, I know I will always have it. (I back mine up on a USB key) Beside Living Cookbook keeps a list/links to all of your favorite recipe sites too.

What your talking about is a database (A database of recipes). You need to get database software. One possible solution is Microsoft Access. I personally would recommend FileMaker Pro. You would have to learn how to set up the database, but once it's setup, it's very easy to maintain. You can get a free 30 day trial from their Web site.
